Search engine optimisation is fairly straight forward if you are just setting up a website or blog. Your first steps will be to research what search phrases you would ideally like your site to found on in search engines.
OK not rocket science but you would be surprised how many people have not a clue about search engines.
Unless you do SEO for a living then you will totally understand and appreciate that fact.
The burning question is why do so many people not understand SEO, not even the basic concept that if you want to be found on a particular phrase then you must at least make sure that those words appear on the page to even have the remotest chance of ranking on it.
Do people really think that some little Googler sits down in front of their PC then go right Fred Blogs has just submitted a new site lets see what it is all about then I can rank the site accordingly.
I do firmly believe that while most website designers are to blame for the fact that most websites totally under perform but as a business owner you have to take some responsibity for your company website and at least research the basics so you can inform the website designer of your aim.
While it varies in its results depending on whether you are logged in or not the Google adwords tool is more than enough guide to get you started. It will suggest more than enough ideas for you to formulate a plan of attack to get the site ranking in the right places.
Then make sure that those phrases appear as exact phrases in your meta tags and that they appear on the page itself, as the point of meta tags is that they are key areas of importance on your web page.
Now before you all get shirty about about the use of meta tags you will never and I mean never be down graded for having relevant well structured meta information so rather than take a chance on not having them, always use them. Bing and Yahoo both rely on them and Google are so guarded about their ranking algorthym that you can not believe a word they say.
So your new site is now designed and filled with great content and launched, sit back and wait and see what happens. Probably a good time then to start building up some links etc.
So that's a new site dead simple.
What about a site that has been around for a while producing a bit of business but not setting the world on fire. Well it is critical before you start pulling the site apart and rewriting this and deleting that you must first establish where the traffic is coming from. The site may have the odd good rank which generates some business so always run several ranking reports on lots of different search phrases and establish where exactly you are in the search engines to start with.
